Is your house feeling a little bare now that the Christmas decorations are down?
You've come to the right place!
Today I'll be showing you how to make this rustic heart art (say that ten times fast)...
Here's what you'll need:
(This post includes some affiliate links for your convenience.)
- A cable spool, pallet, or piece of weathered wood
- A large piece of kraft paper
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Tape
- White pencil, crayon, or chalk
- White paint and paintbrush
- Sand paper or my favorite sander (makes these types of projects a dream!)
Step 1: Fold a large piece of kraft paper in half (so it looks like a card), and use a pencil to draw half of a heart, starting at the fold. Think back to your elementary school years. Use scissors to cut out the heart, and unfold.
Step 2: Center the heart on your spool, pallet or piece of wood. I chose to have the wood slats of the spool going vertically, based on the condition of the spool and some little imperfections I wanted to cover up. Make loops out of tape and secure the back of the heart to the spool.
Step 3. Using your white chalk, pencil or crayon, trace the heart.
Step 4: Paint the outline of the heart with your white paint. Then, fill in, painting with the grain of the wood.
Step 5: After the paint dries completely, sand down the white painted heart for a weathered, distressed finish.
And that's all there is to it for a large, farmhouse-neutral heart piece of art that will look charming long past Valentine's Day! Want a similar look you can just buy, instead of make? How cute is this one?!
Thank you for visiting...

amazing, I love old spools!! PINNING
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Christine!
DeleteLové the grey weathered age to the spool. An addition to the spool I could see your painting a long grey charcoal arrow across it. Or making a wood arrow adding dimension to the spool, even a black iron weathervane arrow screwed onto the face of this heart, adding even a big clock hand... This is soooo cool I would like to make one for Valentine yard art greeting for a valentine brunch/dinner party.
ReplyDeleteSo inspiring dear and I love the vignette you created with it.

Oooh, I love the idea of the iron weathervane! I think I'll keep this one simple for now, but love your ideas. Looking forward to seeing your latest creations. Hoping you have a very blessed 2017... Xo
DeleteBecause it was so cold and snowed here in NC today, I decided to paint a white heart on my spool. I have had it in the "pending project" pile for a while and I am so thankful that you shared today. I love how it turned out and it looks great on my shelf!!!!❤️
ReplyDeleteLove hearing this! Thanks for letting me know! Stay warm... :)
DeleteTotally adorable!!!! I'm pinning, too!!!
ReplyDeleteI love that! Now, I need to find an old spool like that. Ha! I love heart shapes used in decor year round. I like the simple white heart on the distressed greyish barn wood. Great combo!
