My House Is Having An Identity Crisis ~ Yours Too?!

So, the Christmas decorations are away (mostly).
The house is looking cleaner, freer and less cluttered.

For those of us nesters, who love the art of designing our living space,
January is a time of regrouping.

Once the tree and decorations come down, the house often looks sparse. Sometimes this makes us want to fill up the empty spaces and bring in some warmth and charm.

Other times it causes us to continue editing out the excess we've accumulated over the past year, because it feels so good to live simpler and lighter!

And then there's the decorating identity crisis, which is partially the result of things getting shuffled and re-arranged in the Christmas set-up and tear-down...

The moment when you stand back, look around and think,
"I'd like to go in a slightly (or drastically) different direction here."

Maybe you've thought of some ways your home could work better for your family. Maybe you're starting to change styles. Maybe you've found that less is more.
Or, maybe you vow that this is the year you'll get organized.

Whatever the case, I'm right there with you sister.
(Especially if your answer is "D" - All of the above.)

Here's to knowing we are blessed, being grateful,
and choosing to be optimistic - right in the middle of our mess.

xo

ps - In the coming year, I'd love to incorporate a few "modern" farmhouse elements to add a "fresh" feeling. How about you? Is there a style element you're after these days?

    1. I know - I love the shabby and rustic but am feeling like a little more edge would be fun! Just a little...

  4. It's always a quandary after Christmas...liking the clean empty spaces and knowing what to do with them. It is kind of nice to start out with a clean fresh slate at the beginning of the new year.
Looking forward to your ideas for the coming year.

  5. Right now I am loving a simple, almost sparse look. Ha! It definitely is much easier to clean that way. :-) I can't wait to see what you come with!

  6. Yes! Sparse even feels cleaner - though I need to get to the actual cleaning part! :)

  7. Loved getting to see a peek at your bedroom. So pretty! I agree that after the holiday decorations come down things look so different and sparse. I think that's why I like adding greenery and flowers to my spaces. Also having a fire in the fireplace and lighting candles helps warm up the house at night. I do that throughout the winter.

    1. Thanks Kelly - yes, my Mom is making us linen ruffle bedding - it is amazing but not quite finished! I hope to post on it sometime this month! Bringing in fresh greenery, flowers and candles sounds wonderful this time of year!!

  8. Five years ago I did add modern elements to our home, they looked good, integrated well into our decor - but this year as I was readying the house for Christmas decorating, all the modern elements were taken down and moved out. I felt like I was living in someone else's house, it didn't feel like me or really reflect me.

  9. I'm having trouble with my décor, too. Don't have a clue what to put on my shelves. So it sits as it is. Until something hits me. But I wish it would soon. I'm thinking of getting a few more ironstone pitchers. The shops are bare right now. Not much to choose from. Thanks for the post.

    1. It's almost better to keep it bare than put something there just to fill the space! Ironstone pitchers would be lovely! A fun item to collect :) Enjoy the treasure hunting!

  10. I'm chafing at the bit to paint some things, but must wait for the dreadful ear to heal! I want to purge, re-evaluate and paint with abandon!

  11. My home is having an identity crisis, but it's more real. It used to be all shabby fru-fru decorated with white, cream, and lots of pink. I have begun to purge out the overly girly, lacey stuff (which started months ago in an effort to pare down, edit and de-clutter all the collectible displays that were impossible to keep clean--some of which I didn't even notice anymore) and revert to a more middle-of-the-road, somewhat Pottery Barn-style neutral palate. So as I look around this small Santa Clarita, CA condo, it feels confused. Or perhaps it's just torn between the old and the new, the tattered and the fresh, the chippy and the ORB, and the continual pulling back to what felt comfortable, and really me, before I evolved. It may need therapy.
