Farmhouse Living Rooms (Tips for Living with White)

I hope you're enjoying the weekend!

If you've visited here before, you know how I feel about white in the home...
I love the peaceful, bright and clean backdrop it creates.

And while white is not known for hiding dirt, there are ways to make living with white easier. (Even if you have three growing boys and two dogs. And two+ acres of dirt.)

One of the most asked questions I receive is how I keep white couches clean.

If you're going to have white seating, it probably won't always be clean. Unlike different colors of seating, on white, dirt shows... quickly. That being said, I love white slipcovered furniture because it can be bleached.

We used to have a tan slip cover on our sectional that we could wash but we couldn't do much for stains. Bleach helps with the tough spots.

Next, don't forget the power of the flip. If one cushion gets a little dirty, don't prematurely wear out the fabric by washing the slip cover. Instead, flip it, when possible, and wait until both sides need cleaning.

Now here's my biggest cheat. Notice the arms of the couches in the pictures above and below? Farmhouse style allows for a bit of rustic charm. I often use feed sacks and folded blankets on the arms of our family room couches to extend their lives. They provide added texture and a buffer for those little sticky hands!

Do you have white furniture, or would you ever?

Most of the pictures in this post were taken from my Instagram account. If you're not already following along, I'd love to have you join me here, where I post almost daily.

  1. I have white furniture. If I don't have white slipcovers, the furniture is at least covered with white blankets.
Also wanted to let you know that my dad is feeling a wee bit better. I really appreciated your thoughts and prayers.

    1. That makes my heart happy! Thanks so much for letting me know.

  2. Hi Julie, l found your lovely blog today through Mary Alice at Chateau Chic and l've loved seeing your all white living spaces. l too love white and over the past 5 years or so have painted most of the walls and furniture white, but somehow colour always seems to come creeping in despite my best efforts not too...haha...Your beautiful serene living area is an absolute credit to you and what wonderful tips you've shared to keep them that way. Your dining setting is gorgeous and l also love the rustic storage unit with the letters on's all very funky.

  3. Yes I have white sofa, loveseat and chair in our living room. Also very light carpeting, white trim, pale gray walls....and 3 dogs, one of them is a big shedder ;-) My tricks are much like yours: throws over the ends of the sofa where the dogs like to lay makes it easier to keep the slipcovers clean. Bleach or oxiclean for keeping them white. Honestly I'd rather know my furniture is dirty and needs cleaning as opposed to sitting on a darker color and wondering if it does! ;-)

  4. I love all of the white you have in your home! I agree with all of the tips you gave too. I have white slipcovers that show dirt easily, but I just wash them and then they're like new! I also think white is so easy to live with. I don't tire of it since it's so versatile.

  5. Very pretty..and good from Cozy....

  6. I've always wanted white furniture, but having three black pets makes it quite difficult to achieve it. I love your tip of flipping over the slipcover and washing only after both sides need it. That's great! I'd love to invite you to stop by the Inspiration Thursday link party on my blog and share a couple of your great posts. We kick off at 9pm EST on Wednesday night and party all day Thursday and Friday. I hope to see you there!
