Hi Friends ~ Have you caught spring fever? Or are you suffering from cabin fever?!
Here in the Pacific Northwest we've had several days of gorgeous sunshine and now... snowflakes are lightly falling again. Since going to Hawaii is not an option (Did I mention we're having our whole septic system repaired as I write? Ah, the joys of country living...), I decided to freshen up just a small area in our home for spring.
If you (and/or your budget) is not ready to flip your whole house from winter to spring, consider these five easy tips for a farmhouse-inspired spring vignette:
1. Choose a highly-visible location in your home to maximize those happy spring "feels." Think of an area that is somewhat contained - like a mantel, side table, shelves, or hutch - where you can feel like you've "finished" decorating a space with just a few spring touches. (Some days we just need to feel like we actually finished something, don't we?!)
2. Use words as artwork to convey a feeling... If you're decorating shelves or a hutch, you might use simple framed words like "grow," "flower market," "welcome spring," or "herbs." I brought in this wall scroll with a passage from Numbers that is meaningful to me, and expresses things I pray for my family. Visually, I felt like the soft, natural color and the lightweight script is in-keeping with spring.
3. Bring in touches of nature with plants and blooms. I stuck with whites and greens, but pops of color would be fun too! I used a mix of real and faux flowers and plants. You can't beat real for beautiful, fresh scents, cleaner air, and natural beauty. Faux is more affordable (long-term), easier to care for (just a little dusting), and allows you to find certain colors and options that may not always be readily-available in their live versions.
4. Mix aged and new containers and accent pieces for patina along with a fresh, airy feeling for spring. Weathered terra cotta and galvanized containers among chippy white spindles provide a time-worn feel, while crisp woven baskets help keep things feeling light.
5. Create a cozy space for curling up during April showers and dreaming of May flowers!
