If You've Ever Considered Having Chickens...

Maybe this will put you over the edge!

Has it been a hard day? Could you use a little reason to smile?
Please enjoy our 2015 chick photo shoot... :)

The day after getting home from our trip to the desert, the boys and I could hardly wait to head on over to our local feed shop to bring home some baby chicks!

This year, we decided on two Rhode Island Reds, three Americaunas (they lay blue or green eggs) and three Silkies (who look like they're wearing feathered slippers).

We're really hoping the Americaunas are hens, who will give us some pretty-colored eggs. Last year, we only chose one Americauna, who we named Lucy. Well, we ended up re-naming Lucy, Lewis, since he turned out to be a rooster! Lewis is always on high-alert, day or night. If he hears any noise, he crows his ever-loving head off. We're pretty sure our neighbors love us. But, he is a good watch dog rooster...

This little girl (I say that in faith, they don't guarantee the gender of Silkies!) is already growing her "slippers."

I love the picture below, looks like they are gathering for a meeting...

The ride home from the feed shop is always fun, with the baby chicks chirping in the box. The boys carefully and enthusiastically pick names for their chicks... I occasionally remind them to pick girl names (we can always pick boy names later if need be, but we'll cross that bridge...)

Our youngest son has show and tell this Friday. Any guesses what he's bringing in? ;)

And here they are, back in the barn, under the heat lamp...

Wishing you a happy day, from our peeps to yours...

  1. They are soooo cute! We don't live on a farm and will probably never have chickens, but I did grow up in the country and spent a lot of time at my cousin's farm. This did make me smile. It make me think of the episode on I Love Lucy when Lucy and Ethel decide to buy lots of chicks but they have to stay in the house because the hen house isn't ready yet. Lucy does a cute imitation of a chick. Lovely post! Good luck with the naming! Diane

  2. Julie what a great time you and your family will have with these chicks. It will teach them more than they probably want to be taught. This is how nature teaches us the Lords way. Darling pictures. :) Jo

  3. A 'watch rooster' -- too cute and they can be intimidating that's for sure.

    1. I know! I sometimes throw a treat out into their chicken run while I go into the coop - - the rooster makes me a bit nervous. It's the beak. Ha!

  4. I love your chicken posts (I love ALL your posts). I show them to my 91 year old Dad who had a large chicken farm that he started as soon as he returned from Europe post WW2. He gets a real kick out of the photos. Thanks for giving us both big smiles.

This is the episode of the chicks on I Love Lucy I was mentioning. If you don't have time to watch the whole episode, Lucy does her imitation about 24 minutes in. Diane

  7. Hi Julie! We got our baby chicks! 8 of them! A month ago! I'll email you their cover girl shot! Ha! They are all getting along beautifully and they all have almost all their feathers! Wow! In such a short time they are double or maybe triple their size! Looking forward to seeing them out in the new cottage/coop we are having built! Can't wait! I hold them and talk in baby talk to them! They look up at me and just listen! I just love them! Enjoy your new babies! So far it's been a lot of fun! Take care,Cindy from my Idaho farm!

  8. They are SO cute! I loved how you said one of them is already growing her "slippers". LOL! I think it's so interesting that most people don't know the gender until they get older. It's like a science experiment! Hope you end up having mostly girls.
