~ Vintage Ticking and Farmhouse Containers ~

Are you daydreaming of spring and planting a garden?
Of sunlight that carries a warmth with its rays? Longer days? Me too!!
(Though I am holding out hope for one more snow - - the kids love it so much!)

Since most of the yard is dead dormant,
I've been craving plants, flowers, freshness and life.

So, my son and I headed to Flower World yesterday. This time of year in the Pacific Northwest, there aren't a lot of colorful options for plants...even at Flower WORLD! (The African violets weren't speaking to me.

We did find some nice varieties of green plants to add life to our bare porch.

But first, I wanted to show you this vintage ticking duvet cover that we added to the bench on the porch. I found the duvet while antiquing with my sister... it was love at first sight. :)

We planted these pretty succulents in an old tin feed pail...

And this rusty chicken waterer, purchased at a garage sale
 for $3, makes a sweet farmhouse-style planter.

Baby's Tears (below, in French container) in January is like clockwork for me. Granted, there are not a lot of options right now... but still, I adore this bright green little leafy plant! (Why the sad name? I'd prefer "Baby's Tears of Joy!")

 And last, a rosemary plant.

You'll notice the common thread in our plant selection was...
They're alive... and it's January. Plus, I think they're pretty!

In case you missed it and are interested, the winter wreath DIY tutorial is here.

    1. Thanks so much! Yes, the jute rug has been on the covered porch for at least 9 months and is holding up great! It's a heavy weight rug that I just shake out periodically (as in once every few months :). Otherwise, I just sweep it off or vacuum it.

  3. I too love ticking! The new cushion is just perfect. I leave my containers of succulents outside to winter over each year. Yesterday I noticed that the one sitting on the top of my picket fence table was looking lush and pretty. Thinking I need to move it up on to the porch. Thanks for the inspiration! I just started clearing it of the Winter décor.

  4. They do seem to cheer the porch on these colder days...the containers are wonderful adding to a rustic salvaged farmhouse charm.
The ticking sofa so invites you to sit and take in the beauty of the plantings and their growth they will soon root in. I too did a bit of green plantings to add a winter garden feel to my porch and love how it greets our visiting guest.

    A beautiful weekend to you.

  9. Your porch looks so cozy! I love the plants you chose to use out there. I rarely decorate mine during the winter since nothing every seems to make it out there. i just leave the furniture out. We are having awful weather today. It is cold, windy, and rainy. Looking at your pretty front porch is a breath of fresh air.

  11. I can hardly wait to start gardening but sadly I have months and months of winter to get through still here in Minnesota. Love the plants you've picked out. Baby Tears are one of my favorites also.

  12. Spring can't come too soon for me! No plants can survive outdoors around here right now. We have been in the single digits and will continue that through February and usually get a big snow storm sometime in March. At least the days are starting to lengthen again. Thank you for sharing it at What We Accomplished Wednesdays. Have a great weekend!

    Blessings,Deborah
