Farmhouse Style: Shiplap Update (Fireplace Before and After)

Thank you to all who shared your thoughts on whether we should keep the shiplap accent wall natural or paint it white.

After living with the natural shiplap for awhile, I decided that with our wood floors similar in color, the room was becoming very "warm," less white and bright. My eye would go right to the natural color shiplap and TV.

I wanted the wall to blend better with the rest of the room.
So, I painted the shiplap white...

Looking back at the other side of the room (and a buddy who's hard at work ;)...

So here was the natural shiplap (not very forgiving of the gaps)...

And here it is white...

Here's a picture of the family room, before we moved in...

And now, two-and-a-half-years later...

It's easy to get overwhelmed, thinking of all the things that could be fixed, cleaned-up, or updated around our homes. Looking back at old pictures reminds us that we are making progress, little by little.

Thank you for visiting today!

  5. Your family room looks like a delightful comfy place to hang out. Definitely a good choice to paint the ship-lap. It gives continuity to the bookshelves right next to it as well as with the rest of the fireplace.

  6. I love the painted shiplap over the mantel. Your mantel juts out so it's the perfect frame for it! I don't think I realized that you had bookshelves next to your fireplace. I haven't seen that side of the room in a long time. That's nice for extra storage and decorating!
