Fall Farmhouse Porch

Hi friends! Welcome to our fall front porch. If you can see past the pumpkins, leaves, cornstalks and mums, you may notice something different... We used to have a green front door, but after five years, I was ready for a change. The exterior of our farmhouse is a medium gray color, with white trim. I debated between painting the door black, or going with a weathered, raw wood finish for the door. I decided on wood, and am pleased with the result! (I'll share more on that process below.)

To welcome fall, we used sun-faded cornstalks on either side of the door. Cornstalks are often available at local farms, pumpkin patches, and even grocery stores this time of year. I stacked fresh pumpkins on an orchard ladder for some more vertical height. And near the base of the door is a woven french market basket (ah, more texture!) filled with some leafy branches from our yard.

I found the Welcome to the Farm sign several weeks ago, and purchased it not knowing where exactly we'd put it. After refinishing the door, I liked how the dark font complimented the newly painted door hardware...

Stripping a door is not for the faint of heart. It is very time-consuming! I began by using a natural paint stripper, but quickly switched to this stronger paint stripper. (Just make sure to always wear a mask and gloves, and have plenty of ventilation!) I also did quite a bit of sanding using this sander with this sand paper

For the door hardware, house number (currently covered by cornstalks), and doorbell surround, we removed the hardware pieces, laid them on a paper bag on the grass, and gave them several light coats of this Oil Rubbed Bronzed spray paint. It was very easy, and really gave the entry a more classic, yet updated look (compared with the original brass/gold finish).

This year, I was drawn to the rusty orange and burgundy mums. I planted them in vintage cherry galvanized buckets.

Happy October from our front porch, and thank you for stopping by!

  2. This is so pretty and cozy! Did you punch holes in the buckets for drainage for the mums, or just place another pot inside of the bucket? I live in your area and have been looking forward to visiting your shop. Thank you for your lovely posts. Barbara

    1. Thank you for your kind words Barbara! The buckets are actually vintage cherry buckets, so they already have four small drainage holes in the bottom. I have a couple left at the shop space - or at least I did last time I was in! :) Hope your week is going well!
