Fall Farmhouse Entryway...

Welcome inside! After sharing our fall front porch with you, I thought it was only polite to invite you in... though not TOO far in, or you'll run into the piles of laundry. How about I just show you the entryway today...

We're keeping things simple since this area gets a lot of traffic, not to mention a lot of balls being dribbled. They can't help themselves. (And if you're new here, "they" is our three sons. ;)

Fall Farmhouse Porch

Hi friends! Welcome to our fall front porch. If you can see past the pumpkins, leaves, cornstalks and mums, you may notice something different... We used to have a green front door, but after five years, I was ready for a change. The exterior of our farmhouse is a medium gray color, with white trim. I debated between painting the door black, or going with a weathered, raw wood finish for the door. I decided on wood, and am pleased with the result! (I'll share more on that process below.)

Natural Farmhouse Style for Fall

From the moment my friend gave us these weathered nesting boxes, all I could think of was... PUMPKINS! 

Our Farmhouse Fall Porch (and something I've daydreamed of for years...)

I thought it would be fun to use a variety of farm-style containers on our porch this fall. Galvanized buckets, wood bushel baskets, and a vintage Lucerne dairy crate hold mums, cabbages, and rosemary. (Why rosemary? I love both the scent and the organic look.) 

Pumpkins in sun-faded shades of green, orange and white seem at home on our well-used steps.

Farmhouse Fall Decorating {Part 2}

I hope your week is off to a good start!

This is our boys' last week of summer vacation, and it's hitting us hard. For some reason, I thought it would get easier as they got older. But it hasn't. Not for any of us. We are clinging to summer like white on rice. ;)

It Was Free! {Re-Purposing A Yard Sale Find}

So, we were on our way to our son's football game last weekend, when my car (almost) automatically hung a right at a huge neighborhood sale sign. I knew we had about two and a half minutes to look, otherwise we'd risk being late to the game...

So I did the visual "sweep." (You know what I'm talking about.) That's when I spotted this outdoor fireplace on the curb with a sign that read, "Free." No sooner did my car come to a safe, screeching halt, and we were loading this bad boy (lovely lady?) up.

Decorating for Early Fall in the Family Room...

Our kiddos are getting ready to head back to school and the weather has started cooling down. Even though it's still officially summer, back-to-school time reminds us that autumn is right around the corner.

Sun faded flowers, antlers, and a few pale pumpkins help transition our home from summer to fall... 

August in the Garden...

It has been the sunniest and warmest summer we've had since moving to the Seattle area 15 years ago! It reminded me of summers growing up in Northern California.

Our garden loved all of the sunshine (our grass, not so much)! 

Here is the garden gate, covered in vines and hops...

Once the hops fade to a golden brown, I love bringing them inside to decorate with. The hops vines add texture and a touch of nature to mantels and shelves.

It was a happy morning when our youngest discovered "his" corn was ready! This was our first corn - we had tried last year but it didn't grow. He shucked each ear excitedly and ran it into the house... :)

We are also enjoying watching our first watermelon grow!

Along with our first pumpkins...

Zucchini has grown in abundance.

Grapes grow along our back fence. This type is a little tart, but our boys like snacking on them. Our chickens love them too! ;)

Pumpkins, Candles and Company...

I enjoy using candles on the porch to welcome guests this time of year... 

Usually by the time I'm lighting the candles, our boys are starting to look out the window for any sign of company coming down the driveway.

Last night, we were excited to have some dear friends, 

who recently adopted two precious children from China, over for dinner. 

We've had the joy of watching this sweet family grow to seven! We have witnessed many answers to prayer during their emotional and rewarding journey of adoption.  

As our children and theirs lost themselves in balloon sword fights, costumes and laughter, we were reminded of God's blessings of children, family and friendship.

A Late Summer Garden ~

 Our garden gate is now covered with hops vines…

The hops flowers are very interesting looking...They are pale green and almost resemble a pinecone - though more delicate and "papery."

We are excited to have many grapes this season! They are almost ripe, but already delicious (though still very tart!).

It's been such a treat to have fresh vegetables from our garden. The boys enjoy bringing in our humble harvest, usually around dinner time. 

Cucumbers are one of my favorites from the garden!

The apples are almost ready...

As the lavender is on it's way out, this flowering plant adds color to the front yard.

I'm already dreaming of next year's garden. What will we add? Pumpkins for sure! (I forgot about the pumpkins!! Fortunately we have some amazing local pumpkin farms - but still, it's only a matter of time before our boys ask, "Where are our pumpkins?!" It will give us something to look forward to next  year! :)
