In true spring fashion, our chickens are laying colorful eggs like it's their job. (I guess it kind of is! :) They were hit or miss during the colder, shorter winter days, but now they seem to be making up for lost time. And we're not complaining!

Heritage Breed Chickens {And Which Chicks We Chose...}

Since moving here to our little farmstead almost five years ago, there are three sounds that will forever remind me of spring: 1. The sound of our boys playing outside as the days grow longer 2. The sound of frogs croaking at night (usually noticed the first evening it's warm enough to open the windows!) 3. The sound of baby chicks happily chirping...

When thinking about the breeds of chickens we would add this year to grow our little flock, there were two things I wanted... A beautiful chicken breed, and a breed that would lay colored eggs.

My dad used to travel to Eastern Europe where he'd teach at Bible schools and speak at churches. He would bring us back these beautiful hand-crafted eggs, and tell us about the people he'd met and the things God did.

Unique Vintage Farmhouse Finds {What Stays and What Goes to the Shop}

Hi friends ~ Thank you for your encouragement these last several months as we started our shop space inside of M&M Antiques in Monroe, WA. Many of you who are local have even come in and shopped. That means so much to me!

Today I thought I'd share some recent farmhouse finds and talk about the challenge of determining what we keep in our home vs. what goes into the shop. That's a question I get asked a lot... How do you know what to keep and what to sell?

First, let me say that I try to offer items in the shop that I would use in our own home. That helps me when considering purchases for the shop space. (But it can also cause me to second-guess keeping things because they would usually work so well in our home! See what I mean?! ;)

This 1920's hutch was a tough decision. One hundred year-old patina like this is hard to find. But, it is in our shop where it is holding a lot, and will hopefully make someone very happy!

A Weathered Wheelbarrow and Edible Nests...

The five of us were driving home from our oldest son's basketball tournament on the other side of the state when we came across a favorite mile marker of mine. About 90 minutes from our house, there's a cute, yet large, old-fashioned fruit market. The fruit market takes up the first floor of the old building and the top two floors are...wait for it... an antique co-op! No one in our car would even glance in its direction on the way to the tournament, but on the way home, I thought I had a shot. And when our youngest needed to make a stop himself, I was golden...

Farmhouse Style Spring Decorating

When I consider farmhouse style decorating for spring, I think of the simple 

joys of this season, where new life can be seen throughout nature. 

A rustic nest and a few eggs atop some weathered books...

Some whimsical baby birds and a bunny in the windowsill

 (that will hopefully catch the kiddos' eyes and imagination...)

Some speckled eggs on Spanish moss under a little cloche...

Burlap eggs and baskets add some texture to these kitchen shelves.

My Dad brought us these beautiful hand-painted eggs (below) back from his travels in Europe. This is only part of our collection! Over the years, our three boys have had many Easter egg hunts with these eggs, as one hides them and the others search for them. The thrill of the hunt! (We flea marketing, yard-salers can relate! :)

The framed felt nest with felt eggs art was a gift from a sweet friend.

Flowers collected from the garden and placed into a vintage blue mason jar...

As beauty seems to spring up each day now, I'm reminded of this verse...

10 New Fun Farm Things This Summer...

Happy Labor Day to all you hard working friends!

We woke up to this sweet hand-written sign today... 

Labor Day marks the unofficial last day of summer. The kids head back to school tomorrow and though I think we're ready, there is still a lump in my throat, having to say goodbye to this season of sun and togetherness.

But, instead of mourning it's passing, I wanted to share some fun firsts we had this summer, which was our first summer here at our Little Farmstead!

1. Our chickens laid their first eggs!

2. It was the first time we picked blackberries on our own property.

3. It's the first time we've ever had TWO cats! (Huckleberry and June)

4. It's the first summer we've gotten to roast marshmallows at home!

5. Our first (only?) Cowboys and Indians Pow-Wow.

6. We hosted our first campers!

7. We rode in our arena for the first time (our neighbor's horse)!

8. Our first summer with Sir Charles of Maltby - better known as "Charlie!"

9. We enjoyed fruit and vegetables from our first garden here!

10. We enjoyed many meals on our back porch…

It's good for the soul to count our blessings. 

Feeling thankful…so many answers to prayer!
